Status: ✅ COMPLETE
Scope: What is physically inside a hard disk drive and a solid-state drive, how each stores and finds data, how an SSD keeps itself healthy, and how drives connect to the computer (SATA, NVMe, M.2)
Time to complete: 75-100 minutes of reading + lab
Prerequisites: Chapter 1 (Complete Computer Architecture), Chapter 3 (RAM and Memory Internals), Chapter 4 (Motherboard and Hardware Communication)
What you'll know after: How an HDD's platters, heads and sectors work and why it is slow at random access; how SSD flash, pages, blocks and the FTL work; why TRIM, wear leveling and over-provisioning exist; why NVMe beats SATA; and how to check your own drives in Windows
INTRODUCTION
Your files have to live somewhere when the power goes off. That place is the drive. Two very different machines do the job: the hard disk drive (HDD), with spinning discs and a moving arm, and the solid-state drive (SSD), made of flash chips with nothing moving at all.
This chapter uses real photos of real drives, so you can see what you are learning about. It also uses plain words. Every technical term is explained the first time it appears.
This chapter explains:
- What is inside an HDD: platters, spindle motor, heads, the voice-coil arm, tracks, sectors and cylinders
- Why a hard drive is slow at random access (seek time and rotational latency) and hates being knocked
- How an SSD stores data in NAND flash cells (SLC, MLC, TLC, QLC) arranged into pages and blocks
- The controller and the flash translation layer (FTL) that hide flash's strange rules
- How garbage collection, wear leveling, TRIM and over-provisioning keep an SSD fast, and what TBW and SMART tell you
- How drives connect: SATA with AHCI, SAS, M.2, U.2 and NVMe over PCIe, and why NVMe is much faster
- How to inspect your own drives safely in Windows
