Status: ✅ COMPLETE
Scope: The whole journey of a Windows PC from the power button to the desktop: power-up, POST, finding the boot disk, the Windows boot manager and loader, the kernel, services, sign-in, and what to do when a step fails
Time to complete: 100–130 minutes of reading + lab
Prerequisites: Chapter 4 (Motherboard and Hardware Communication), Chapter 5 (BIOS and UEFI)
What you'll know after: Every step between pressing the power button and seeing your desktop, which program runs at each step, how to read the Windows boot settings, and how to find and fix the step that broke
INTRODUCTION
Pressing the power button feels like one action. Behind it, a dozen different programs run one after another, each starting the next. If one of them fails, the PC stops at that point. Knowing the order turns "my PC won't start" from a mystery into a short list of places to look.
This chapter follows Windows on a modern PC. It builds on Chapter 5, which explained BIOS and UEFI, and shows the full chain around them. It uses real photos and screenshots where they help, and plain words. Every technical term is explained the first time it appears.
This chapter explains:
- The big picture: the stages from power-on to desktop
- How the power supply, CPU reset, RAM set-up and firmware start
- What POST tests, what option ROMs are, and what beeps and lights mean
- How the firmware picks a disk: boot order, MBR, GPT and the EFI System Partition
- What the Windows Boot Manager and the BCD do
- What the loader (
winload) and the kernel (ntoskrnl.exe) set up - How the Session Manager, services, the network stack, Winlogon and LSASS get you to a desktop
- One complete chain diagram, rough timings, and which steps are critical
- The common failures, and the safe repair tools in Windows
