Status: ✅ COMPLETE

Scope: How the parts of a computer are physically connected and how they talk to each other: chips, buses, interrupts, DMA, power, clocks and firmware
Time to complete: 90–120 minutes of reading + lab
Prerequisites: Chapter 1 (Complete Computer Architecture), Chapter 2 (CPU Internals), Chapter 3 (RAM and Memory Internals)
What you'll know after: What every part of a motherboard does, how data travels between the CPU, RAM, SSD and USB devices, and how a PC turns on and keeps time

INTRODUCTION

The CPU and RAM get the fame. But none of them works alone. Something has to connect them, power them, keep them in time, and start them. That something is the motherboard.

This chapter uses real photos of real parts, so you can see what you are learning about. It also uses plain words. Every technical term is explained the first time it appears.

This chapter explains:

  • What each part of a motherboard is, and how the chipset (PCH) links them
  • The "roads" data travels on: PCIe, USB, SATA and NVMe
  • How devices get the CPU's attention (interrupts) and how they move data without it (DMA)
  • How power is made, shared and saved
  • How the CPU talks to devices (MMIO and ports) and how it finds them at boot
  • How clocks keep everyone in step
  • Where the very first program lives, and how to update it safely
